British Island Tour 2008

Scotland – Ireland – Northern Ireland – England

This rebels' tour takes in the spectacularly beautiful land of William Wallace, Rob Roy, haggis, the ghostly keening of the pipes, multi-colored tartans and black Guinness Stout. You'll ride on the left-hand side of the road through Scotland, Ireland and England amid mind-blowing scenery, and rest in cozy inns and pubs where someone is likely to break out in song and hoist a pint to you, a visitor from the colonies.

This is the tour you've wanted to take ever since you saw Braveheart and The Quiet Man, or read How Green was my Valley. You can spend a quiet hour watching the poetry of a sheep dog at work, or lingering over a steaming bowl of corned beef and cabbage in a tap house smelling of pipe tobacco, woolen sweaters and road-worn leathers. And more than likely you'll be beguiled a time or two by the tall tales of someone who swears he's seen Nessie and gossips with a leprechaun.

Here, the English language melds with a Gaelic lilt, creating the lovely brogue you'll be imitating every time you share an anecdote about the land of the Celts. It's so unreasonably, fantastically green here, too. All shades of green, all textures, green beyond green. Castles and spires reign over endless landscapes of green; the roads twist and turn through pastures of green, and if you're lucky your camera may almost capture the gorgeous greens of a wet meadow flaring in a pillar of sunlight slashing through the clouds.
