Aerostich Darien Light Jacket and Pants
Ever wonder why police and fire departments issue jackets in lime-yellow? It's the most conspicuous color in the visual spectrum, says Aerostich. Crash studies have shown that "conspicuity" is a major factor in helping to avoid being hit by a car, and loud clothing—not loud pipes—is what really saves lives. So, the new Darien Light jacket in Hi-Viz lime-yellow from Aerostich already has a lot going for it before you even try it on.
The HT200 Denier Nylon Cordura® and Gore-Tex® fabric laminate is lighter than the regular Darien jacket for comfort over a wider temperature range. Seams are taped for waterproofing, and Scotchlite™ tabs provide reflection at night for extra visibility.
The features of an Aerostich Darien jacket are so numerous that it comes with its own comprehensive instruction manual. Suffice it to say there are many pockets, inside and out, from huge to cellphone-size. Zippered vents, adjustable waist belt, TF3 viscoelastic shoulder and elbow pads, and a TLTec fleece liner are all standard, and there's an optional accessory spine protector. Velcro® tabs allow attachment of a see-through map pocket to the left sleeve.
The fabric feels stiff at first, and bulky with the liner and spine protector installed. Dariens are intended for wear over street clothes, so that means leaving extra room inside. I liked the soft collar and zip-adjustable, Velcro®-closed cuffs. I've only tested its waterresistance in light showers, and so far so good.
The coordinating Darien Light pants have similar features, and are easily the best all-round over-pants I've owned – versatile, comfortable, and practical with the TF3 viscoelastic knee protection.
